A request to all bloggers

You may have noticed earlier a post saying that "Comment Moderation" has been activated on this blog. Well we did decided to activate moderation but after a discussion with "CBNsat Subscribers Unite" we decided against it and removed the post.

The reason was not because of anti CBNsat comments, rather it was the posting of personal information of the CEO. We would like to request all of you not to post the personal information of anyone on this blog as it is not relevant to the discussion.

Please note that if personal information continues to appear we may be forced to close this blog. Whatever your point of view, it maybe supporting CBNsat or against CBNsat please do not post anyones personal information.

First among equals: Sri Lanka's Communiq Broadband Network (Pvt) Ltd launched CBNSat this year after two and a half years of development. Chief executive officer, Muhunthan Canagey, spoke to Ritesh Gupta about Sri Lanka's first digital direct-to-home television platform.(in the news)(Interview)
From: Television Asia | Date: July 1, 2005 | Author: Gupta, Ritesh |

What is the market for digital TV services in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has six million homes, with a 65,000-square kilometre land area. Only a few main cities like Colombo are densely populated. Television viewing is dominated by terrestrial broadcasters. Pay-TV penetration is poor, and focused on Colombo. DTH allows us to cover the whole country. Sri Lanka has at least three million TV homes. 30% have access to nine terrestrial channels, 50% to almost four channels and 70% to only one channel. This shows there is a need for a platform such as CBNSat. Plus 250,000 new TV sets are sold every year.

What are your subscriber targets?

We will be happy with 30,000 subscribers in year one.

Who do you consider as your competitors?

Truly speaking, we do not see a serious competitor. The current pay TV operator's business model is not applicable to the whole country; we are not here to kill competitors but merely to share the big piece of the pie that has not been tapped.

How much do existing services cost?

The main analogue pay-TV operator charges Rs1,650/US$16.50 per month for 18 channels. Our platform delivers 18 channels for Rs500/US$5 per month and 23 channels for Rs750/US$7.50 a month.

What channels do you offer?

The basic package channels include CNN,The History Channel, Cartoon Network, NGC, MTV, A1, Raj (drama), Raj Digital (movie), AXN, RealityTV, Discovery Channel, SET Max, Zoom, Animal Planet. The costlier package includes BBC, Pogo, Nickelodeon, Animax, FTV, Vh1, Discovery Travel and Living, Goal TV 1 and Goal TV 2.

What genres are most popular in Sri Lanka? Sports, action and infotainment

Who pays for CBNSaI boxes?

Subscribers. The complete installation, including hardware, costs Rs1 4,695/US$145 +Vat 15%. With various payment options, subscribers can pay as little as Rs500/US$5 a month

Did you consider subsidising the boxes? And why did you decide against it?

In business no one does charity; subsidising means earn from future revenues; what we are doing is giving users the option of how they want to buy the box-pay cash and save money or take it on an easy payment scheme. We feel this is more ethical and does not create a regressive monthly subscription charges for users.

How are you distributing your boxes?

Our product will be available in over 1,000 stores countrywide. Demo units will be available in over 300 shops across the country, ensuring that at least one demo unit is available in each town.

What kind of investment has been incurred? What are your breakeven projections?

I am not authorised by to publish the exact figures, but can tell you the investment is multi-million dollars. I will not be able to quote the break-even.

Who are your technology partners?

Europe Star's satellite with Scopus Networks and Irdeto Access.

What are your expansion plans? We will expand the programme offerings, including distance learning ...

The country faces a crisis of quality teachers and lectures and with our platform we can solve the problem to a great extent.

* Cellular services cut off in northern Sri Lanka since August
Thursday, October 5, 2006, 4:00 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 05, Colombo: Cellular phone services in the northern Jaffna peninsula of Sri Lanka have been unavailable since August this year and tens of thousands of customers who have mobile phones say they have lost both their money and their faith in cellular companies.

The Sri Lanka government says that after the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) attacks on the Muhamalai Forward Defense Line, telecommunication companies were requested by the Army to temporarily switch off their connections for security reasons.

The government further says this closed a major income source for the LTTE, drying up the terrorists' fund generation as the cellular companies stopped their monthly payments to the LTTE, which they had to pay in order to maintain their telecommunication services.

But the Jaffna users of cellular phones say it is ridiculous to switch off cellular services in the government-controlled areas of Jaffna to block an undisclosed income source for the LTTE. They say that cellular services in the LTTE-controlled Kilinochchi area are still operating.

Cellular companies have been paying huge sums of money to LTTE. Where is the so called "national security"?

area888 keep it to yourself and have fun,We have been getting info for the past 6 months.

MANIL said...

On what channel are they showing the ICC champions trophy?

MANIL said...

No hard feelings area888 we are in the same boat, what i was saying is that if we had CBNsat we would be watching on digital.

I dont think anything will come out of the supreme court hearing than being postponed to january.

To be perfect it would be originaly shown on SETMAX in India and if you buy any of these connections sold by dish TV or TATA sky you will still be able to watch digital.

i think they would have already signed a agreement with a sattelite provider by now if they found one.

"" BN has crept into the scene when there was no regulation, which is illegal.""

There are little or no regulations/laws for computer crime in srilanka. But data transmission over networks is being done in srilanka since a long time. P2P file sharing is done in larger extent as well. According to your logic, those who use networks to share files are criminals as there are no regulations??? Is this you or your arse talking? The inability to create regulations in a certain sector is entirely the fault of a government. Regulations are dreafted using industry experiences. Usually, regulations are imposed as the industry moves forward. Wasnt SATnet operating since 2001? They used DTH technology so let us know how CBNsat was the first operator who dominated DTH market in stealth. CBNsat was/is not the first but it was/is the best. Retarded fuckfaces like you seem to always miss crucual facts like this.

""Ideally only SLT and Rupavahini should be given licenses to operate for atleast 3-5 years. Remember the Telco sector. SLT had a monopoly for a very long time until the deregulation came. SLT should dominate the market like in Telco sector. SLT money goes to boost the govt income which in turn will help in country's development.""

...and half of SLT was sold off to Japan's NTT. I bet you little tit didnt know this either? Do you remember the time when SLT had a monopoly over IDD rates? The Rates were shitload times higher than current ones. Competition is good for both the industry and consumer. If you are thinking of developing a country by creating monopolies for certain institutions, thats as good as robbbing citizens of their money and investing it in the development (or sent directly to the pockets of politicians to be realistic)of a country. This is a very short sighted strategy.

""Now beside their illegal and unethical operation, the CBN has been found to have LTTE connections.
""

You can keep on saying that till the hell freezes over but without proof you wont convince anyone. Maybe you can present the true facts to CID by dialling 119 or 118 (since you seem know all about CBNsat and their fundraising for LTTE). But i dont think you have the balls to do that. You fart a lot but you cannot even shit properly.

""Hmmm... It is going to be very difficult for them to get a license if not impossible.""

maybe. But thats not due to any of the reasons you mentioned. What you posted is bullshit. At least i believe it is bullshit untill i (if i ever) see someone presenting believable facts about their LTTE connections. And some cockless faggot posting in a blog beggining like "i heard...", "i got information..." or "my father told me..." isnt valid proof. So please dont spam the forum with baseless crap coz its irritaing.

If no one is given licence how could they operate?

Is it mean that if you have political support you don't need to obey the law or anything?

""hay... so ligh struck tower... u r saying not to give up as yet?""

I never tried to force anyone to do anything. Never will you see me trying to convince anyone by force.
What i expressed/ express in this blog is/will be my personal opinion.
I never posted any "give up now" or "its all over" comments. And i never posted comments saying sorry for what i genuinely posted. I am not sorry for anything that i (my geniune account) said earlier coz all of it contained true fact. Those who flamed my posts never tried to break my arguments but instead they tried to use multiple blogger accounts and imitate a "lightning_struck_tower". lol fuck off i've used the internet long enough not to get excited over some anonymous mofo posted on a blog.

Blogging is a weak way of communicating. A lot of social context is filtered in online commmunication technologies. Using a blogger account to spam the hell out of a blog doesnt make you a hero lol. Usually those who pretend to be online thugs are the ones that are first to bend over in real life lol.

About the CBNsat scenario, i think they still have options. As i said earlier i have very little hope. But in my opinion, the management had the time to predict the outcome. That is, if anyone is to know that their service is doomed for ever, they will be among the first. If all facts point to a permanent shutdown, why
arent they shutting the service down and run away? Is there a glimmer of hope which is only known to the mgmnt??

And according to the information i have got, CBNsat was never shut down over an LTTE allegation. And it has NOT BEEN PROVEN even in the court hearings. The B report filed by the CID does NOT mention anything about LTTE connection. This is why i back CBNsat. The moment govt prove the LTTE allegation, i will throw the dish away but until then im on their side coz i believe that this shutdown is a result of a conspiracy lead by Lakshman Hulugalle and B.A.C. Abeywardena.

And rajarata, your posts contain little fact and too much speculation and gossip. You arent going to convince many people lol.

cant the blog admin do anything about the identity theft.

Lightning_Struck_Tower said...

it isnt actually identity theft. You can choose whatever username and then user a different nickname which is used to sign posts.

Blogger doesnt distinguish between uppercase and lowercase in post signing. So anyone can use the same name with different capital and simple combinations. But the name looks the same on blogger after the post is made.

However the profile link is unique to each account. So even if the faking motherfuckers made 1000 accounts, real one can be identified using the profile link. Profile link can be obtained by clicking on the nickname at the top of the post (blue color).

Also note the admin uses a picture in his profile. Its displayed as thumbnail next to each of his posts. The fake account which posted the "its all over" comment doesnt have it. But this too can be imitated.

However fakes can be busted by the profile link.

"Dialog will not go down the path of conventional tv channels, but will promote pay tv channels such as AXN, ESPN, Cinemax, Star World, etc and lator get into mobile tv as well," a company official told Sunday Times FT.

Dear cbnsat, employees and all customers (and bloggers who are not included in any of the categories)

I am not sure when or what the final verdict of this case would be. Rather than what the doubt is about when.
However had a great service from cbnsat during the 5 month duration I had it.
Sadly the case looks like it will stretch till infinite.
As most of my blogger friends, I am tired of watching most of the local channel who telecast about 90 %( or more) bullshit in their broadcasts.

Hard to hang in with cbnsat because of the less interest they show towards this case. Maybe they are working hard behind the curtains (hope so).
But can’t help my dying interest towards cbn.

This personal comment from a dissatisfied but loyal cbnsat customer.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

any way to all bloggers, keep up the good work.

cableguy said...

Dialog scenario is out. They are only interested in Pay per channel TV and will take 6 months to start. They have plans and acquiring CBNSat does not seems to be part of their long term plans.

SO CBNSat has to keep looking for other avenues.

To clarify a few points made by me so far,

1. I have not seen (or heard) any evidence that lead to a possible LTTE-CBNsat connection. Therefore i do not believe CBNsat had any LTTE connection. Prove it or at least give solid facts, i'll believe it.

2. I believe CBNsat was shut down due to a conspiracy lead by Lakshman Hulugalle and BAC
Abeywardena. (if any of their agents are watching this blog, they can kiss my ass)

3. I have very little hope on CBNsat returning coz the vested interests are still at large. But this is srilanka and SL is unpredictable.

And my dear fake "lightning_struck_tower",
I know you have fallen in love with me. I love you too :D If you drop me a mail on
