A request to all bloggers

You may have noticed earlier a post saying that "Comment Moderation" has been activated on this blog. Well we did decided to activate moderation but after a discussion with "CBNsat Subscribers Unite" we decided against it and removed the post.

The reason was not because of anti CBNsat comments, rather it was the posting of personal information of the CEO. We would like to request all of you not to post the personal information of anyone on this blog as it is not relevant to the discussion.

Please note that if personal information continues to appear we may be forced to close this blog. Whatever your point of view, it maybe supporting CBNsat or against CBNsat please do not post anyones personal information.

The CBNsat management should counter this aligations by explaining about the funds and what this asian broadband network is all about.

First among equals: Sri Lanka's Communiq Broadband Network (Pvt) Ltd launched CBNSat this year after two and a half years of development. Chief executive officer, Muhunthan Canagey, spoke to Ritesh Gupta about Sri Lanka's first digital direct-to-home television platform.(in the news)(Interview)
From: Television Asia | Date: July 1, 2005 | Author: Gupta, Ritesh |

What is the market for digital TV services in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has six million homes, with a 65,000-square kilometre land area. Only a few main cities like Colombo are densely populated. Television viewing is dominated by terrestrial broadcasters. Pay-TV penetration is poor, and focused on Colombo. DTH allows us to cover the whole country. Sri Lanka has at least three million TV homes. 30% have access to nine terrestrial channels, 50% to almost four channels and 70% to only one channel. This shows there is a need for a platform such as CBNSat. Plus 250,000 new TV sets are sold every year.

What are your subscriber targets?

We will be happy with 30,000 subscribers in year one.

Who do you consider as your competitors?

Truly speaking, we do not see a serious competitor. The current pay TV operator's business model is not applicable to the whole country; we are not here to kill competitors but merely to share the big piece of the pie that has not been tapped.

How much do existing services cost?

The main analogue pay-TV operator charges Rs1,650/US$16.50 per month for 18 channels. Our platform delivers 18 channels for Rs500/US$5 per month and 23 channels for Rs750/US$7.50 a month.

What channels do you offer?

The basic package channels include CNN,The History Channel, Cartoon Network, NGC, MTV, A1, Raj (drama), Raj Digital (movie), AXN, RealityTV, Discovery Channel, SET Max, Zoom, Animal Planet. The costlier package includes BBC, Pogo, Nickelodeon, Animax, FTV, Vh1, Discovery Travel and Living, Goal TV 1 and Goal TV 2.

What genres are most popular in Sri Lanka? Sports, action and infotainment

Who pays for CBNSaI boxes?

Subscribers. The complete installation, including hardware, costs Rs1 4,695/US$145 +Vat 15%. With various payment options, subscribers can pay as little as Rs500/US$5 a month

Did you consider subsidising the boxes? And why did you decide against it?

In business no one does charity; subsidising means earn from future revenues; what we are doing is giving users the option of how they want to buy the box-pay cash and save money or take it on an easy payment scheme. We feel this is more ethical and does not create a regressive monthly subscription charges for users.

How are you distributing your boxes?

Our product will be available in over 1,000 stores countrywide. Demo units will be available in over 300 shops across the country, ensuring that at least one demo unit is available in each town.

What kind of investment has been incurred? What are your breakeven projections?

I am not authorised by to publish the exact figures, but can tell you the investment is multi-million dollars. I will not be able to quote the break-even.

Who are your technology partners?

Europe Star's satellite with Scopus Networks and Irdeto Access.

What are your expansion plans? We will expand the programme offerings, including distance learning ...

The country faces a crisis of quality teachers and lectures and with our platform we can solve the problem to a great extent.

i HAVE INFORMATION THAT ALL RELAVENT INFORMATION WITH REGARD TO CBNSAT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO CID.tHEY ARE THE COMPETENT AUTHORITY AND IN THEIR REPORT CBNSAT HAS BEEN CLEARD WITH NO CHARGERS AGENEST THEM.THIS WAS CLEARD IN THE FUNDIMENTAL CASE THEY PUT.CID COULD NOT COME WITH ANY VALID ALLIGATION.I THINK SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE WORKING FOR HULLA COMET AND ABEY ARE TRAYING TO BRING IN THEIR OWN VERSION TO THIS GAME.SO DO NOT WORRY CBNSAT HAS IS CLEAN , ONLY THING EVERYONE IS WAITING TILL ALL GET THE LICENCE.iF CBNSAT IS TO TELL ALL THEIR INFORMATION INCLUDING CHANNEL PARTNERS THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO ANY BUSINESS AS COMPETITORS ARE THEIR TO GRAB THEIR BUSINESS.IF ANY ONE IS CONFUSED THEY COULD GO TO CID AND READ THIR REPORT.THIS COULD BE OBTAINED BY GOING TO THE LAYWERS . SO LETS NOT PUT CBNSAT DOWN AND REQUEST THEM ALL INFORMATIO WITH REGARD TO THEIR BUSINESS AS THEY NEED TO SAFE GUARD INTREST OF THEIR CONSUMERS.WHY IF THEY TELL ALL IN THIS BLOG U AND I WILL NOT GET THE CHANNELS THAT THEY GET.

Well i think you need to first go back to elementary school to learn your numbers first!
Also who the hell told you u need such kind of money to start this kind of business? That obviously goes to show your level of business capacity! Utter shame on people who spit out words without knowing any facts!
I will always support CBN, coz i know they are clean! I think this country men deserve to be in a deep dark well, without any access to info. they need to be gamays forever....

MY DEAR FELLOW BLOGEERS,

STILL YOU DON'T HAVE A CLEAR ANSWER FOR ANY QUESTION I ASKED. ALL WHAT YOU CAN DO IS PERSONAL MUD SLINGING ON ME.

WHY CAN'T YOU GUYS TELL HOW MUCH AND WHO HAVE INVESTED IN CBNSAT ??

AND WHERE THE HELL IS "ASIAN BROADBAND NETWORKS" ??????

AT LEAST ANSWER THE SECOND QUESTION WHICH IS A VERY BASIC ONE.

THE INTELLIGENT THING IS NOT TO SLING MUD ON ME. BUT ASK FROM THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW AT CBNSAT THESE Q'S !!!!!

THEN YOU WILL REALISE EVEN THEY DON'T HAVE A CLEAR ANSWER FOR US.
WHAT MATTERS TO ME IS THAT WE HAVE PAID THEM RS. 17,000 TO GET A SERVICE AND CBNSAT HAVE FOOLED US ALL.

THIS CANT GO ON LIKE THIS !!!!!

THERE SHOULD BE AN END !!!!!!

GIVE US THE SERVICE BACK WITHOUT LYING ALL OVER !!!!!!!!!!

Dear Sanju,

I guess u have got your brains mixed with your ass. Look no further man go and get this info from the relavent investigative authority- CID.U think they dont know whats happening???????

First pont gat the real info on the real investment figure?13 billion my foot .They could have strated with Tata sky with that money. You go and do the home work and come !!!!!!!!

I guess u dont seems to know or you dont simply dont want to know!!!!!!

With all these it is strange that SUP Court gave a order to uplink with a license authority . ( do u read papers?) I guess Asia Boradband Network was never involved in funding and may have had a involvement in getting some channels to CBNsat( discussions) .They was naver a mention about Asia Broadband Network. So Sanju please mind your own business and do not try to sell your comet or Shit net connection here. There is a separate blog for them and you may feel free to put your comments there.( i guess no one reads that )

Also Rajarata if your wifes phone number and address is in the directory can we put that here so everyone can call her and ask for a favour.( Somawanasa sisters business) Learn your manners you M F.

MIKE said...

The supreme court did not give an ORDER to uplink with a licenced operator(When CBN lawyers requested CJ to give it as an order he overuled same and said to enter in to a commercial agreement and that depends in whether the other party is willing)

The bird who is ill - You have asked another question"Why the hell did they invest so much money?
Thats where the answer lies.

All you guys are in a dream world without any basic information and once you realised you would be in Hospital.

BBC World on Sri Lanka's CBNSat DTH platform

Indiantelevision.com Team
(28 May 2005 8:00 am)

MUMBAI: From 27 May, BBC World, the 24-hour international news and information channel, is available to viewers across Sri Lanka on the country's first direct-to-home platform - CBNSat (Communiq Broadband Network).
BBC World already reaches thousands of households across the country through multi-channel multipoint distribution system [MMDS] and cable platforms, informs a BBC release.

BBC World head of network development Gerry Ritchie says, "Sri Lanka is an important and growing market for BBC World and we are very excited to be part of this new platform and the horizons it opens up for us in the region."

"The channel has a significant following here, especially in light of our coverage of the recent tsunami tragedy. We look forward to providing viewers with our award-winning journalism and news reporting," Ritchie adds.

Handling the region, BBC World regional manager T.R. Bhakthavatsala adds, "This is fantastic news and a great technological advancement for the broadcasting industry in Sri Lanka. The DTH service, using state-of-the-art technology, will offer viewers better quality television output."

CNBSat's service is founded in partnership with Hong Kong-based ASIA BROADBAND NETWORK LTD.

So this "Asian Broadband Network" crops up again,Can anyone explain what this is

rajarata said...

The purpose of creating this fake company called Asian Broadband Networks(ABN) is twofold.

1. To fool the Government and obtain a BOI status, they needed a "foreign partner". Remember, BOI companies enjoy a huge tax breaks.

2. To conveniently transfer the profits 'legally' back to TRO via ABN.

* Cellular services cut off in northern Sri Lanka since August
Thursday, October 5, 2006, 4:00 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 05, Colombo: Cellular phone services in the northern Jaffna peninsula of Sri Lanka have been unavailable since August this year and tens of thousands of customers who have mobile phones say they have lost both their money and their faith in cellular companies.

The Sri Lanka government says that after the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) attacks on the Muhamalai Forward Defense Line, telecommunication companies were requested by the Army to temporarily switch off their connections for security reasons.

The government further says this closed a major income source for the LTTE, drying up the terrorists' fund generation as the cellular companies stopped their monthly payments to the LTTE, which they had to pay in order to maintain their telecommunication services.

But the Jaffna users of cellular phones say it is ridiculous to switch off cellular services in the government-controlled areas of Jaffna to block an undisclosed income source for the LTTE. They say that cellular services in the LTTE-controlled Kilinochchi area are still operating.

Cellular companies have been paying huge sums of money to LTTE. Where is the so called "national security"?

SC CASE - Three judge bench heard the case. ONE judge of three, has CBN Sat Connection. Justice Nihal Jayasinghe, has or rather had a CBN Sat connection. Justice Marsoof who was sittin on the 1st day of the SC hearings refused to hear on the basis he too had a CBN Sat connection. However, (Check his roof, you will see a CBN dish!) Justice Jayasinhe, though went on to hear the case. Generally a judge would not hear a case in his own cause as it is a conflict of interest. But this was a different scenario. But quite surprisingly it seems that Justice Jayasinghe, was inclined against CBS Sat, and perhaps justified his hearing the case. In any event, so much for judicial independence folks! I dont see any light in the Nov 9th SC hearing. Mr. Sathya Hettige, ASG and Mr. Sumathi Dharmawardene SSC appearing for the state are taking a rigerous approach based on National Security ans so forth. The secretary to the TRC when asked about the CBN Matter, stated it was highly confidential. The TRC has already granted LBN cable their license. But I do not see TRC giving CBN Sat a license!

area888,You make some sense and all these judges who are subscribers wouldnt just wait if there rights are taken away for nothing and even Gihan Pilapitiya the magistrate is supposed to be a subscriber

There is a real serious issue and the higher ups are well aware of the findings and still hulla and Balla wanted to capitalise on the situation, but they never could.

LBN hasnt been issued with the licence ye and anyhow CBNsat will never be.

It seems to be a small operation,Like this FTV sattelite dealers around colombo and when you compare those outlets looks far better than srilakvahini. It looks a typical government department in the rural area and for them to give pay TV is a joke.

Area888 said...

ok...i'll tell you what i heard Manil. I sent an email to CBN Sat and got a reply which said that they have the option of sending transmission through another provider. If management decides to take that then no problem and they can bat on till they get license to transmit on their own. Else they'll have to wait till Nov 6th for next hearing. This is the info I had. I did not want to share as, the Internet is opent to everyone and the competitors, if any, of CBN will get bright ideas!

i think they would have already signed a agreement with a sattelite provider by now if they found one.

Now only the Sri Lankan Government is formulating procedures to issue DTH licences. CBN has crept into the scene when there was no regulation, which is illegal. Now they have to wait in the line to get the license like any other DTH license seeker. Ideally only SLT and Rupavahini should be given licenses to operate for atleast 3-5 years. Remember the Telco sector. SLT had a monopoly for a very long time until the deregulation came. SLT should dominate the market like in Telco sector. SLT money goes to boost the govt income which in turn will help in country's development.

Now beside their illegal and unethical operation, the CBN has been found to have LTTE connections.

Hmmm... It is going to be very difficult for them to get a license if not impossible.

yakuza said...

pity we will miss once in a life time F1 finale between Schumacher and Alonso due to whatever reason against cbn. looks like we have to stick with the dumb ass political progrmmes and teledramas for the rest of our lives.

Area888 said...

dont worry. i shall not rest till justice is done, if at all. But its worth the efforts. If license is refused for unreasonable reason, as consumer we have recourse to the Consumer Affairs Authority. We'll see what we can do!

Lightning_Struck_Tower said...

"" BN has crept into the scene when there was no regulation, which is illegal.""

There are little or no regulations/laws for computer crime in srilanka. But data transmission over networks is being done in srilanka since a long time. P2P file sharing is done in larger extent as well. According to your logic, those who use networks to share files are criminals as there are no regulations??? Is this you or your arse talking? The inability to create regulations in a certain sector is entirely the fault of a government. Regulations are dreafted using industry experiences. Usually, regulations are imposed as the industry moves forward. Wasnt SATnet operating since 2001? They used DTH technology so let us know how CBNsat was the first operator who dominated DTH market in stealth. CBNsat was/is not the first but it was/is the best. Retarded fuckfaces like you seem to always miss crucual facts like this.

""Ideally only SLT and Rupavahini should be given licenses to operate for atleast 3-5 years. Remember the Telco sector. SLT had a monopoly for a very long time until the deregulation came. SLT should dominate the market like in Telco sector. SLT money goes to boost the govt income which in turn will help in country's development.""

...and half of SLT was sold off to Japan's NTT. I bet you little tit didnt know this either? Do you remember the time when SLT had a monopoly over IDD rates? The Rates were shitload times higher than current ones. Competition is good for both the industry and consumer. If you are thinking of developing a country by creating monopolies for certain institutions, thats as good as robbbing citizens of their money and investing it in the development (or sent directly to the pockets of politicians to be realistic)of a country. This is a very short sighted strategy.

""Now beside their illegal and unethical operation, the CBN has been found to have LTTE connections.
""

You can keep on saying that till the hell freezes over but without proof you wont convince anyone. Maybe you can present the true facts to CID by dialling 119 or 118 (since you seem know all about CBNsat and their fundraising for LTTE). But i dont think you have the balls to do that. You fart a lot but you cannot even shit properly.

""Hmmm... It is going to be very difficult for them to get a license if not impossible.""

maybe. But thats not due to any of the reasons you mentioned. What you posted is bullshit. At least i believe it is bullshit untill i (if i ever) see someone presenting believable facts about their LTTE connections. And some cockless faggot posting in a blog beggining like "i heard...", "i got information..." or "my father told me..." isnt valid proof. So please dont spam the forum with baseless crap coz its irritaing.

Area888 said...

Mr. Iightning_struck_tower. You have mistaken. If there is NO REGULATION, then doing some act which does not violate the EXISTING regulation is LEGAL. You cannot expect enterprises to see unwritten law and apply for licenses which are non existent! IF the authorities want to regulate the Cable companies then they CAN come up with laws with RETROSPECTIVE Effect. And compel the companies to comply. THIS has NOT been done in this case! Trust me on this dude, both the lawyers who appeared for LBN and CBN plus those who appeard for the state are known to me! So this is a cronic legal problem which the system has to sort out. So, this is the correct legal position. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO DO SOMETHING FOR WHICH THERE IS NO LAW! Currently there is NO law that you cannot smoke cigars, and that's why its not ILLEGAL! similarly, if there was no license for which CBN Sat could have applied, their service was legal! BUT otherwise, IF they knew about any regulation and so forth and if there were regulations, it would be ILLEGAL and not otherwise. I am simply stating the legal scenario. Because I am in a position to do so.

.....Yet, until now, outlets for programmers were the eight free-TV terrestrial broadcasters and private satellite dishes catching free satellite signals. With the introduction of Sri Lanka's first pay-TV platforms at the end of 1998, 1999 is set to be a boom year.
Three pay-TV licences have been isued-one each for cable, MMDS and satellite. Cable and MMDS will be up and running first. These could be followed by a proposed satellite service, although industry sources have cast doubt on the viabilit-and, indeed, the actual launch of theproposed direct-to-home television service....

We have talk to CBN Sat management regarding our hard earned money, & they told us that until further discussions with the higher management they are unable to do anything.

And for sure we will have to forget a refund.

lightning_struck_tower,

I am not against anybody personally. But I like state sector dominance in the industry. SLT which is 35% owned and managed by NTT is doing a very good job in the Telco sector. Similarly I want them to play a dominant role in Cable TV sector as well. Other companies including CBN, Dialog, Maharaja, EAP etc should play a secondary role. I hope CBN will come back one day but not before SLT establishes itself as the dominant player. Another option is, the govt should start a different company for DTH, keep atleast 51% of the shares and sell the rest to foreign and local private sector, and allow them to manage the company. Only after a few years, other companies should allowed to enter the DTH foray.

CBNfuck or LTTEsat is going to be history. But not so soon.

Until now CBNsat has paid me 3000/= to do the postings here.
Hahahaha.

""hay... so ligh struck tower... u r saying not to give up as yet?""

I never tried to force anyone to do anything. Never will you see me trying to convince anyone by force.
What i expressed/ express in this blog is/will be my personal opinion.
I never posted any "give up now" or "its all over" comments. And i never posted comments saying sorry for what i genuinely posted. I am not sorry for anything that i (my geniune account) said earlier coz all of it contained true fact. Those who flamed my posts never tried to break my arguments but instead they tried to use multiple blogger accounts and imitate a "lightning_struck_tower". lol fuck off i've used the internet long enough not to get excited over some anonymous mofo posted on a blog.

Blogging is a weak way of communicating. A lot of social context is filtered in online commmunication technologies. Using a blogger account to spam the hell out of a blog doesnt make you a hero lol. Usually those who pretend to be online thugs are the ones that are first to bend over in real life lol.

About the CBNsat scenario, i think they still have options. As i said earlier i have very little hope. But in my opinion, the management had the time to predict the outcome. That is, if anyone is to know that their service is doomed for ever, they will be among the first. If all facts point to a permanent shutdown, why
arent they shutting the service down and run away? Is there a glimmer of hope which is only known to the mgmnt??

And according to the information i have got, CBNsat was never shut down over an LTTE allegation. And it has NOT BEEN PROVEN even in the court hearings. The B report filed by the CID does NOT mention anything about LTTE connection. This is why i back CBNsat. The moment govt prove the LTTE allegation, i will throw the dish away but until then im on their side coz i believe that this shutdown is a result of a conspiracy lead by Lakshman Hulugalle and B.A.C. Abeywardena.

And rajarata, your posts contain little fact and too much speculation and gossip. You arent going to convince many people lol.

cant the blog admin do anything about the identity theft.

Lightning_Struck_Tower said...

it isnt actually identity theft. You can choose whatever username and then user a different nickname which is used to sign posts.

Blogger doesnt distinguish between uppercase and lowercase in post signing. So anyone can use the same name with different capital and simple combinations. But the name looks the same on blogger after the post is made.

However the profile link is unique to each account. So even if the faking motherfuckers made 1000 accounts, real one can be identified using the profile link. Profile link can be obtained by clicking on the nickname at the top of the post (blue color).

Also note the admin uses a picture in his profile. Its displayed as thumbnail next to each of his posts. The fake account which posted the "its all over" comment doesnt have it. But this too can be imitated.

However fakes can be busted by the profile link.

Dear cbnsat, employees and all customers (and bloggers who are not included in any of the categories)

I am not sure when or what the final verdict of this case would be. Rather than what the doubt is about when.
However had a great service from cbnsat during the 5 month duration I had it.
Sadly the case looks like it will stretch till infinite.
As most of my blogger friends, I am tired of watching most of the local channel who telecast about 90 %( or more) bullshit in their broadcasts.

Hard to hang in with cbnsat because of the less interest they show towards this case. Maybe they are working hard behind the curtains (hope so).
But can’t help my dying interest towards cbn.

This personal comment from a dissatisfied but loyal cbnsat customer.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

any way to all bloggers, keep up the good work.

Interesting comments,

As For the spineless guys backing the 'Friends of the Kennel', I really feel sorry. Must be some jobless graduates who are given a net connection to fabricate stories about ltte etc.(proved by broken english and bad taste)

As for state dominance, that is bull, tell me one successful state run company?

In fact our wishes are that CPC is privatised at the earliest. Just see SL insurance, im sure it would have not survived a year more if not for HJ.

One thing for sure there is a set of 'Humpada' fellas who want to continue carriying that 'Hum Malla' and never let this country move forward.

It is very promising that the good for nothing, jobless, ill bred, stinking, 'shahodaraya's' have been sidelined.

Let this country progress please, we are way back, lets not try to bring down someone who tries some new technology over here. We are very good at talking about history, about laws that dont exist, but as i over heard somewhere "sri lankans are good at only one thing when it comes to moving forward- Jumping Ques "

All these are correct guys but none of our comments here are going to work and its defeneite that CBNsat will never be issued with the licence.

I am well aware that they are looking at evey option in the interest of the subscribers and even to dispose they should have a fair offer.

I think the Dialog scenario gives them a fair option for them to dispose off the busness.

cableguy said...

Dialog scenario is out. They are only interested in Pay per channel TV and will take 6 months to start. They have plans and acquiring CBNSat does not seems to be part of their long term plans.

SO CBNSat has to keep looking for other avenues.

To clarify a few points made by me so far,

1. I have not seen (or heard) any evidence that lead to a possible LTTE-CBNsat connection. Therefore i do not believe CBNsat had any LTTE connection. Prove it or at least give solid facts, i'll believe it.

2. I believe CBNsat was shut down due to a conspiracy lead by Lakshman Hulugalle and BAC
Abeywardena. (if any of their agents are watching this blog, they can kiss my ass)

3. I have very little hope on CBNsat returning coz the vested interests are still at large. But this is srilanka and SL is unpredictable.

And my dear fake "lightning_struck_tower",
I know you have fallen in love with me. I love you too :D If you drop me a mail on
filenetworks@gmail.com, we can carry out relationship forward :p
