CBNsat tests transmission

CBNsat seems to have carried out a Test Transmission at approximately 9:30pm yesterday according to our fellow bloggers.

It seems that the recommencement of transmission is now very close and it should be on air on Saturday (02nd Dec) evening or Monday/Tuesday (4th/5th Dec) according to reports received. A saturday launch would be ideal due to the fact that this is a long weekend.

There is a comment on the TV Radio Sri Lanka blog that has been put there by the "Lanka Media Outlook" blog in order for them to increase their hits at our expense. For more on this please click on "Lanka Media Outlook trying to..........". (--> Lanka Media Outlook says that the comment that we have referred to here was not made by them. We like to thank them for the confirmation and for clearing matters.)

We request our readers to keep us updated on the latest regarding CBNsat as the days progress.

Mr. Muhunthan, thank you for giving Srilanka a taste of real entertainment. If you didn’t start CBNsat, we would all still be watching bullcrap like Shaka Laka Baby on local Tv. But in this country, good people like you cannot survive. As long as mofos like Hulugalle and Abewardena kiss politician ass, srilanka will be a hellhole to live in. Good bye and good luck in whatever you do from here. But you will always be the man who created Cbnsat.
I request one more favor from you. Please start a DTH operation in some other country(where they respect good entrepreneurs) and beam local channels to countries such as Uk, USA, Dubai, Australia etc. The day you out perform the piece of crap called 'TVLanka' will be a good day for all Srilankans.

And CBNsat should definitely be back by today evening or tomorrow. There is no need to worry about that.

Tough regulations stifling satellite tv growth in Sri Lanka, but 'phenomenal' growth expected: analysts

November 30, 2006 (LBO) – Tough regulations are stifling growth of Sri Lanka's cable and satellite television industry, a local research firm says, but is poised to take off as new and larger players' lower costs and improve choice.

Sri Lanka's current penetration of satellite and cable channels is less than one percent of the three million households on the island that have a television.

Though highly under-penetrated, local firm Frontier Research says the sector is poised for growth as telco giants like Dialog Telekom – Sri Lanka's largest mobile phone operator, get into the business.

Dialog, the local unit of Telekom Malaysia, said recently it hoped to buy up satellite pay television operator Communiqu Broadband Networks and CBNSat for 523.8 million rupees.

The telecom giant also recently acquired a stake in Asset Media for 325 million rupees, which comes with a free to air and pay television licence and its own broadcasting studio.

"Sri Lankan media trends are nearing those of the rest of the region and it is down to one word – convergence," Imran Furkan, Analyst with Frontier Research, told LBO in an interview.

"In the past, cable and satellite television were delivered via traditional cables and direct to home transmission. Now they are delivered using new mobile platforms."

Digital convergence, also known as quadruple play, allows telecom operators to offer cable television, broadband, fixed line and mobile telephone services.

Regulatory hurdles though, could stifle expected potential, though Frontier Research did not disclose expected penetration rates over the coming years.

"Growth will also depend on how regulators look at technology. In Sri Lanka we still look at Pay Television as a luxury, unlike in India where it is a utility item and therefore costs less," Furkan said.

Start up units for satellite television broadcasts is charged a 60 percent duty for the equipment, which ups the cost of initial installation.

Other restrictive regulations include the requirement to get an operating licence from a state owned broadcasting company Rupavahini. "How can a competitor be a regulator?" Furkan adds.

Satellite pay TV operator CBNSat was shut down by the government for about six months this year over alleged licence issues, but was cleared for operation recently by local courts.

But CBNSat dominated the market within one year of starting operations in 2005, with 20,000 customers to the averages of about 8000 customers by other cable operators at the time.

"Our regulations were built up in the 1980s, when the state had a monopoly on broadcast. Regulations have not kept pace with rapid technological and competitor growth. Growth would be phenomenal if regulatory constraints were lifted."

Satellite television however, will have to be a mass market product, Furkan says, because of the high costs of technology to distribute it, at the moment.

But rising incomes over the last few years and lowering start up costs, Frontier Research says, could lead to increasing affordability of pay television in Sri Lanka.

Average household incomes in Sri Lanka reached just over 20,000 rupees a month last year, up 36 percent from 2002, while average income in urban areas was up to 31,239 rupees, up 39 percent over the same period.

Consumers, as in completely deregulated markets like the Unites State and Australia also show greater willingness to pay for improved content, the findings show.

Even in semi-regulated markets like Malaysia, average revenues per user is 21.2 dollars at penetration levels of 30 percent, expected to go up to 41 percent by 2015.

"Firstly, consumers can expect wider choice with new players coming in. Secondly, affordability as scales expands than with traditional satellite broadcasters because telecom providers have the infrastructure in place and there is no real capital investment except for upgrades," Furkan said.

Sri Lanka's Dialog Telekom takes charge of cable TV operator CBN SAT

December 2, 2006 (LBO) – Dialog Telekom said Saturday that it has taken full control of cable television operator CBN SAT, that was previously shut down by the government for not having necessary paperwork.

CBN SAT, a direct-to-home satellite TV service, was earlier owned by Communiq Broadband Network (Pvt) Ltd.

Dialog, a unit of Telekom Malaysia, paid 523.8 million rupees to take full control of the cable TV operator, which will be run by its fully owned subsidiary, Asset Media (Pvt) Ltd.

With over 20,000 customers todate, CBN SATs programme line up includes Sri Lankan television channels, and international content like CNN, BBC, HBO, Cinemax, AXN, ESPN, Discovery Channel, MTV (Music Television) and Cartoon Network.

Getting CBN SAT on board is a key milestone in Dialog's strategy to offer quadruple play (mobile, fixed, broadband, television media) or four-play products to Sri Lankans.

"This will result in Dialog Telekom making transformational investments in Digital Broadcast infrastructure targeting digital terrestrial broadcast, Direct to Home (DTH) and Mobile Television service provisioning," the company said.

CBN SAT services would commence in test transmission mode on or around the December 2 and would be scaled up to full commercial operations within a few days, Dialog said.

Asset Media's new board of directors comprises of Yusof Annuar Yaacob (Chairman), Hans Wijayasuriya, Nihal Seneviratne Epa, Moksevi Prelis, and Wan Zaidan Wan Mahyudin.

Dialog commands 60 percent of the market with over 3 million subscribers, followed by Mobitel Lanka, Celltel Lanka Ltd, Hutchinson. The telecom regulator is in the process of selecting a fifth operator.

Sri Lanka, which became the first South Asian nation to start mobile services, when Celltel Lanka began operations in 1989, now boasts over 4.28 million subscribers, according to Central Bank figures.

Guys, I think CBN has a problem with one transponder. Few days back one of our bloggers mentioned that one of CBN's transponders were given to another operator. If that so, then CBN has allocate another transponder and they have to configure our decoders as well because we cannot change decoder settings.

Long live CBN and I hope that our decoder light will not turn back to red again. (Unless there may be a signal drop :) )

Dialog buys two Sri Lankan firms - CBN SAT

Dialog Telekom, subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia Bhd's (TM) has acquired 100 percent of Communiq Broadband Networks (Private) Ltd (CBN) and CBN SAT (Private) Ltd for Rs.523.8 million, in a bid to strengthen its media operation and achieve a quadruple product proposition for consumers in Sri Lanka, namely in mobile, fixed, broadband and television media.

"The rationale of the proposed acquisition of CBN and CBN SAT is to deliver expedited achievement of the several key market critical success factors such as immediate capture of content agreements, existing customer base to provide the operation with immediate and significant market presence," the company said in a report.

Dialog, the country’s biggest mobile phone operator will buy the companies from Muhunthan Canagasabey and Niranjan Canagasabey who have equal stakes in both the companies and the acquisition, would be financed from Dialog's internally generated funds and/or borrowings. CBN SAT is due to resume transmission tomorrow after six months being off the air due to a legal dispute.

TEAM FILEnetworks said...

I don’t think this transponder thing is going to be a big problem. One transponder in PANAMSAT12 can air 18 channels as I heard. There are many unused transponders available in PAS12 so CBNsat can purchase another easily I believe.
Or they can use a compression mechanism to boost the number of channels aired from one transponder. DishTv does something similar. DishTv currently has 7 transponders in NSS6 satellite and they can air 28 channels + active services such as news active and sports active with one transponder because of the compression technology they use. There is no visible Picture quality loss and quality is on par with that of cbnsat. So don’t worry about this problem just give it a week to resolve

And I think it's too soon to bug them about new channels. They just recovered from a disaster. They'll add new channels in the future I'm sure and I have faith in them.

That’s why I keep the CBNsat decoder on standby while I watch dishtv for now :)

LBN still remains sealed
CBNsat resumes transmission tomorrow following court battle victory
by Suresh Perera

CBNsat, the satellite broadcasting station which emerged victorious after a six-month court battle last week said that transmission will resume tomorrow (4).

"We are ready to go full throttle", a jubilant company official declared. "It will be business as usual".

While granting interim relief to SonicNet Technologies (Pvt) Ltd., permitting it to recommence the operation of its Communiq Broadband Network (CBNsat) transmission with immediate effect, the Supreme Court also granted leave for the company to proceed with its plea for the alleged infringements of its fundamental right to equality and equal protection of the law.

The transmission of CBNsat and Lanka Broadband Networks (LBN), another key cable television provider in Sri Lanka, was blocked by the CID in June this year for allegedly operating without a valid license.

The go-ahead by the Supreme Court for CBNsat to resume operations came at a time negotiations were being finalised to sell the facility to Asset Media (Pvt) Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Dialog Telekom Ltd.

Court was told that Asset Media has already got licence under Section 28 of the Rupavahini Corporation Act (Media licence) permitting it to broadcast and that the Dialog Telekom has a licence under and in terms of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.

"With the resumption of transmission, we will be mapping out our future strategy under the new management", the official said. "Enlisting new subscribers will also be done after the transition period".

The abrupt sealing of CBNsat and LBN affected a combined 35,500 subscriber base as operations remained crippled.

Notwithstanding the Defence Ministry clearing LBN, transmission has still not resumed apparently because the relevant papers have so far not been approved by the President.

Kanchana Ratwatte, Director-General, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) who was quoted in the Sunday Island of November 19 as saying that LBN will be back on air "in a matter of days" said last week that the issue is expected to be resolved soon.

"Six months have already gone by since LBN was sealed and 10,500 still continue their long wait", a company official said.

"We have already made payment for the new license, but the go-ahead has not been forthcoming", he said.

Ratwatte was also quoted in the same report saying that the Defence Ministry had not cleared CBNsat to resume operations, which means that a license for this satellite television provider will not go through.

Mr. Muhunthan Canagey
The "GOD FATHER" of Satellite TV in Sri Lanka bidded farewell to CBNSat on Saturday. The following is his last letter to CBNSat Subscriber Unite.

Dear Mr. Muhunthan,

You will be remebered forever in our hearts as the person who opened the doors of infotainment to our nation.

GOOD LUCK !

02nd December 2006

Dear Valued Customers,

I take this opportunity to thank all our dear valued customers for bringing us to the resolution of the CBNSat saga which we have reached today. Thank you all for being so extremely patient with us and for understanding our predicament.

At our last Supreme Court hearing the Court ordered CBNSat to recommence transmission immediately.

“Having considered submissions of Counsel and the information disclosed
in Court, we grant leave to proceed in the alleged infringement of the Petitioner’s fundamental rights guaranteed by Article 12(1) and 14(1) of the Constitution. We also grant to the Petitioner interim relief prayed for in prayer (d) of the prayer to the Petition”.

“The Petitioner is permitted to recommence the service that was
provided prior to the seizure and there will be no obstruction to the
Petitioner and /or Communiq Broadband being companies owned
by the same share-holders from carrying on the transmission that was
done prior to the seizure.”

These are some of the quotes extracted from the Court order. The comprehensive Supreme Court order will be available on our website, which is www.cbnsat.com and I welcome you all to visit the site.

I have now accomplished my goal that all customers will continued to be served, all employees will continue to be employed and that all commitments to all the financial institutions and creditors of CBNSat will be honoured. Today will be my last day in office as I have decided to move on with my new venture due to the existing shares of the company being sold to Asset Media (Pvt) Ltd., a subsidiary of Dialog Telekom Limited whom I am confident will take CBNSat to the next level.

My achievement would not have been possible if I had not been backed by such wonderful people as you all and I am extremely grateful to the support given by our stakeholders, including the CBNSat Subscriber Unite group, our valued customers, our employees, the financial institutions and other parties whose patience and understanding was vital.

I hope you will all continue to enjoy CBNSat and its services.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

Muhunthan Canagey

It was a victory for the CBNSat Subscribers on Saturday 2nd December after seeing the green light back on their decoders PERMANENTLY after 6 long months. It was a long time than we initially thought and finally justice has prevailed. But the process took so long than we anticipated and finally the founder CEO of CBNSat had to sell it to Dialog Telekom for the good and benefit of everyone.

We happen to see the pictures on our TV’s on Saturday evening but the bitterness of the whole fiasco which unfolded during the last 6 months is a black spot in the History of Sri Lanka. Finally all the allegations made against CBNSat have just vanished into thin air.

I take this moment to thank on behalf of CBNSat Subscribers Unite for everyone who stood behind bringing in justice to us, the CBNSat Subscribers. Mr. Muhunthan who fought right throughout to bring back CBNSat online and running the customer care right throughout to keep the subscribers informed.

And a very special BIG Thank you to the blog admin. The CBNSat blog was the most happening place for the subscribers all around the island for the past 6 months. It was the sole place for gathering information on the situation and exchanging the ideas. The first of its kind in Sri Lanka. And the blog paved way for the subscribers to meet on-line and then get together to form “CBNSat Subscribers Unite” to act as the sole representative body on the part of subscribers to bring in justice for the victimized subscribers. And my special thanks goes to all the senior bloggers prmo, rob, cbnsatvictim and mohan for helping out tremendously in all the matters which the “CBNSat Subscribers Unite” came across with. And I thank all the people who signed our online petition, All the news papers who published our articles and press releases on their news papers specially Sunday Times and Daily Mirror, Rivira and Nation news papers. Also I need to thank the staff of CBNSat who stayed with the company during this painful time.

And all the others who helped CBNSat subscribers to bring back their service.

THANK YOU FOR YOU ALL !
