Plans under way to regulate all satellite broadcasting services, phone service providers (The Daily News 23rd June 2006)

The Government yesterday said plans are under way to regulate all satellite broadcasting services and register satellite phone users amidst the current controversy surrounding a private satellite broadcasting network.

Kanchana Ratwatte, Chairman Telecommunication Regulatory Commission told the weekly Cabinet briefing that the Commission has received directives from President Mahinda Rajapaksa to formulate laws to regulate all satellite broadcasting stations and telephone service providers.

Ratwatte said the Commission was instructed to keep a list of satellite based service providers and satellite phones. Commenting on the issue, Government spokesman and Information Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said under the existing Telecommunications Act, the Sri Lanka Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) has full authority to investigate and monitor satellite broadcasting in Sri Lanka.

Now...Now...I think on the 28th the Media Guy will come and say that they will have to wait till the proposed regulations are drafted to consider issuing a license.

If that will be the case we will have to wait more ...

Definitely YES !

The deadline for these applications is July 21st. So after that they will ask for another 6 months to issue the licences !

The authorities better do something immediately.

They have any way given a licence for Satellite Data Broadcasting according to the DG TRC - Kachana why shut them down.

Is it not data that decodes and creates Video. This is a digital world. Everything is Data now.

Are they going to shutdown the internet service providers too. Since we can access streaming Video, and then state Internet providers cannot do streaming video.

This country is going backwards to more than 20 yeards.

This is mad bunch of idiots sitting on the jobs.

I feel it's neccesary to have access to news 24 hours for people. Electronic media is the fastest in bringing in security updates and news abour natural disastes like tsunamis, floods, hurricanes etc.

Banning TV, RADIO after 10 p.m. or imposing a tax is an idiotic decesion by a foolish minister !
